Cycle Tourism on the Coast

Building Cycle Tourism on the Coast

May 22, 2014

The Gibsons Chamber of Commerce, Gibsons Visitor Information Centre, and Transportation Choices – Sunshine Coast held a Cycling Tourism workshop on Friday, May 9, 2014.

Tourism is a major economic force on the Coast, and cycling is one of the fastest growing areas of recreation amongst adults in Canada. Put those together and add our close proximity to the Lower Mainland (which is experiencing a strong upswing in cycling), and we have the opportunity to attract a major new source of tourism business.

Following is a selection of the workshop materials and notes from the event.

Cycle Tourism in Cowichan Valley

Cowichan Locomotion and Locavotion

By Joan Boxall

We love to cycle. Not too far, nor for too long because we’re locavores. Locavores eat locally and move minimally. We roll off the British Columbia Ferry at Swartz Bay terminal on southern Vancouver Island onto Lochside Trail, cutting across Saanich Peninsula.

North Vancouver approves All Abilities, All Ages Bike network

Kudos to North Vancouver City Council. The City of North Vancouver has a vision for a comprehensive, all ages and abilities (AAA) bike infrastructure network....and last night they approved it!

Cycling on the South Fraser Perimeter Road

Interesting article written by an ardent cyclist who often travels from Burnaby to Vancouver Island.

John

Hi folks,

Rode from home (Burnaby) to Victoria on Saturday, then back from Victoria to downtown Vancouver on Sunday. On Saturday, I took the South Fraser Perimeter Road from the Patullo Bridge. Just a few impressions:

Cycling Skills program info from Comox Valley CC

By offering the CanBike courses to adults (particularly seniors) we were able to develop a team of volunteers who helped with the Bike Skills Rodeos we offered at the elementary schools (focusing on grades 3 to 5).   We were able to purchase equipment necessary to run these rodeos including bikes that we could loan to the children who did not have an appropriate bike to use and a trailer to transport and store all these items.   The other thing funded was a part-time coordinator for the year.
Although the funding and paid position have ended the program is established and bike rodeos are being run at almost all of the elementary schools in the district.

Nanaimo Regional Rail Trail Newsletter

Dear Supporter of the Nanaimo Region Rail Trail,

Thank you for your interest in the NRRT! In this inaugural newsletter, we will include recent news about our regions progress on the trail, a fundraising update, as well as next steps for the Rail Trail Partnership and some ways you can help move the trail forward.

Correspondence between Comox Valley CC and Graham Bruce - ICF

I am forwarding an email from Graham Bruce of ICF in reply to an email I sent him.  It reinforced to me how important it is for the various island cycling coalitions to keep each other informed about the latest developments and ways to support this project.  I have sent a copy to Jack Beck as well.

I will talk to the board about writing a letter of support for the trial as Graham has suggested.  Has or will GNCC and OceansideCC written letters of support?  I asked Jack if BCCC has/will write a letter of support as well.

I am also sending a link to the Vancouver online bike map done by UBC - you might already have seen this but in case you haven’t it is work a look:  http://www.cyclevancouver.ubc.ca/cv.aspx

Initial Meeting of Van Island Cycling Coalitions

On February 8 board members of the Greater Nanaimo Cycling Coalition, the Comox Valley Cycling Coalition and the Oceanside Cycling Coalition met in Parksville for an informal meeting.
It was a very productive and informative meeting between the 3 organizations. We discovered that we all have similar challenges and issues. We floated several ideas and suggestions in solving these challenges.
